I get commissions for purchases made through links in this post. Read more

Philips 3200 Lattego vs Saeco Xelsis is an easy debate that doesn’t take me much time to find out the model that excels: Philips 3200 LatteGo. So, if you are searching for a super-automatic machine that knows how to brew delicious espresso and has tons of one-touch recipes, don’t miss my honest review of both machines.

The winner Philips 3200 LatteGo is the upgraded version of its brother Philips 3200 Classic in the 3200 Series. The designer equips this model with an automatic milk carafe that allows users to enjoy a 100% hands-free brewing experience. I’m very impressed by its excellent espresso flavor and efficient extraction progress. If you are looking for a plain sailing machine, I highly recommend it.

As for Saeco Xelsis, the device owns every feature that we are looking for in a modern machine: good drink quality, an elaborate list of one-touch beverages, and other additional settings for cleaning. But, for its price, I’m not convinced of what it has to offer. Regarding controlling the coffee dose, Saeco Xelsis is inferior to Philips 3200. Learn how it performs for me below.

Philips 3200 LatteGo vs Saeco Xelsis: Differences

Philips 3200 LatteGo brutally wins 4-1 against Saeco Xelsis. However, the machine is priced much better, and its consistent performance regarding espresso extraction has impressed me more than Saeco Xelsis can. You can check out my full review below!

Programmable drinks

Winner: Saeco Xelsis

Saeco Xelsis overpowers in terms of programmable beverages
Saeco Xelsis overpowers in terms of programmable beverages

Saeco Xelsis overpowers Philips 3200 LatteGo in terms of programmable beverages. The list of drinks is:

  • Saeco Xelsis: espresso, coffee, cappuccino, latte macchiato, caffe latte, flat white, espresso lungo, Americano, espresso macchiato, ristretto, espresso doppio, cafe au lait, froth milk, warm milk, hot water
  • Philips 3200 LatteGo: espresso, coffee, Americano, cappuccino, latte macchiato

If you want to play around with recipes, Saeco Xelsis is obviously the most suitable device. But if you only look forward to brewing more traditional coffees, Philips 3200 LatteGo should be more than enough.

Dosing consistency and flow control

Winner: Philips 3200 LatteGo

Regarding dosing consistency and flow control, Philips 3200 LatteGo excels. With this machine, I can easily pull rich and balanced espresso or coffee without worrying about the recipes being watered down due to water leaks or lousy dosing.

Unfortunately, the problems that I dread can be found in Saeco Xelsis. I have spotted the machine leaking outside of brewing hour. And it seems to struggle to close the valve after each extraction. As a result, coffee-tinted water comes out of the tap after the correct dose of espresso has been extracted. This results in a bitter but watered-down flavor. Needless to say, I have sent the machine back to get it fixed.

Milk temperature and texture

Winner: Philips 3200 LatteGo

The LatteGo system is a wonder. It can froth microfoam and deliver milk at the right temperature (around 150°F). I have brewed cappuccino with this so many times that I have lost count, but the frother always does a marvelous job creating dry foam for this specific recipe. So in shorts, if you are still hesitating about the LatteGo system, I suggest you don’t. It has proven to be potent through many frothing sessions.

As for the milk carafe on Saeco Xelsis, I can also achieve microfoam with this one, but the milk temperature has been too cold for me to rank it as a decent milk system. With this machine, I get milk hotter than 100°F only. This is TOO cool for any kind of drink unless you are trying to make iced coffee.

Drip tray design

Winner: Philips 3200 LatteGo

Philips 3200 has a larger and deeper tray design. It may seem like such a minor detail, but it won’t if you consider your comfort in the long run. The drip tray on Saeco Xelsis is too shallow, so it can’t hold a good amount of water, which is even worse considering its leaking problem. When you remove the tray, the chance of spilling water everywhere is high due to its shallowness. I have experienced it first hand.

Price and value

Winner: Philips 3200 LatteGo

The price and value relation is an important factor to consider when purchasing any electronic device that will accompany us daily. But, of course, no one wants to pay extra for a machine that they can replace with another one with exactly the same functionality but at a much lower price. And in the case of Saeco Xelsis, this is the problem that the machine faces.

Overall, this product line’s features are good, but the price tag is too big for its value. I expected a highly potent machine with high-end espresso flavor and easy-to-clean functionality. Sadly I haven’t been able to pull that off with this particular device.

In case of Philips 3200 LatteGo, I’m satisfied with all the functions of the machine and the price that comes with it. The brewing features are mid-range, and so is the price.

Philips 3200 LatteGo vs Saeco Xelsis: Similarities

Philips 3200 LatteGo and Saeco Xelsis have some akin features that I want to highlight: the position of the water tank and the average heat-up time. Check out for more details below!

Front-access water tank

You can easily locate the water tanks on the side of these machines. And to remove them, you can find a holder or leverage that allows you to pull the tank from and to the front. This means that you won’t have to design a top or backspace with these models. You will soon realize how convenient this small detail is if you have purchased a machine with a vertical-pull water tank.

Quick heat-up time

The average time that Philips 3200 LatteGo and Saeco Xelsis require to prepare hot water runs around 60 seconds. And what kind of heating elements are these devices equipped with? Philips 3200 LatteGo has a single boiler system, while Saeco Xelsis excels with dual Thermoblock. But judging from their real-time performance, I find them very similar in the temperature department. Philips 3200 even does a more consistent job most of the time.
