Philips 3200 vs Terra Kaffe: Classic vs Contemporary – Which One Will Win?

I get commissions for purchases made through links in this post. Read more

Philips 3200 vs Terra Kaffe is a fun debate for me to find the winner because the exterior design of the two is very distinctive. But regarding functionality, Philips 3200 wins without any doubt. Its espresso flavor is much more robust, and the overall value is adequate for its price.

The winner 3200 boasts a stable grinder with 12 settings that allow users to adjust the coffee strength in more than one way. I have brewed so many times with this device, and the flavor always is so balanced and smooth. In addition, the clean/ descale indicator is a great touch that not all machines have, including Terra Kaffe.

The runner-up, Terra Kaffe, has a very contemporary design with a minimalist interface. Users can easily brew from espresso to cappuccino with a 100% hands-free milk carafe. However, compared to 3200, this machine falls behind due to its high price and not very impressive espresso flavor.

Philips 3200 vs Terra Kaffe: Differences

Philips 3200 wins 3-1 against Terra Kaffe thanks to its overall better espresso delivery and practical features regarding cleaning. It’s such a shame that Terra Kaffe invests so much in its appearance that it lacks in almost all other important departments: espresso flavor, milk texture, etc.

Espresso flavor

Winner: Philips 3200

From any espresso machine, we should expect a robust cup with the right sweet-to-bitter ratio that gives a fresh kickstart in the morning. On the other hand, no one wants a bland cup of espresso, and even a cup of latte or cappuccino filled with milk doesn’t have to be “weak” with the right espresso extraction. So how do Philips 3200 and Terra Kaffe perform in the flavor department?

Philips 3200 easily wins the round with its overall better coffee flavor. It’s balanced with all flavor notes of sweet, nutty, and bitter. I will highlight that this machine isn’t made for extra-strong coffee. It belongs more to the medium flavor scale. But, I still enjoy this machine’s fresh cups more than most models in this price range.

As for Terra Kaffe, I have to struggle to get the taste I want, yet it is never up to my expectation. After numerous attempts, I concluded that this model brews very weak coffee and espresso. Is it so weak that it tastes like clear water with some coffee flavor? No. But it’s still too dull for a balanced cup. It’s unfortunate because I wanted it to work.

One-touch milk-based beverage

Winner: Terra Kaffe

Terra Kaffe offers these one-touch recipes: Americano, espresso, cappuccino, and latte. So in case you want a quick cup of latte but don’t want to be manually involved in the brewing process, just because, Terra Kaffe is a great choice.

As for Philips 3200, the automatic recipes are: espresso, espresso lungo, coffee, and Americano. So, there is no efficient one-touch cappuccino with this model. However, if you check out its brother Philips 3200 LatteGo, you will find milk-based buttons for a quick hands-free experience. The price will be higher, of course. But the drinks’ quality is so worthwhile that I believe there is no reason for us not to check out this mid-range model.

Milk frother

Winner: Philips 3200

I find the milk foam texture of Philips 3200 and Teffa Kaffe to be up to par. They both are designed to make creamy and smooth steamed milk with little dry foam. So if you are looking for a microfoam system from these models, you have to walk away empty-handed. But if you are a big fan of flat white, mocha, macchiato, or latte, these machines are more than perfect for you.

So why does Philips 3200 win anyway? It’s due to the milk temperature. Regarding the temperature aspect, Philips 3200 excels in all categories possible. The same goes for the milk. I have checked the milk jug temp after frothing, and the heat is always at an ideal level from 140 to 150°F. So, it will help slightly cool off the scorching espresso. But at the same time, not making the beverage turns cold too soon for a relaxing coffee experience.

The milk temperature performance of Terra Kaffe can’t surpass that of Philips 3200. I usually pull milk at around 130-140°F, so not much cooler than Philips 3200.

Utilities

Winner: Philips 3200

Philips boasts of more additional features that assist during and after the brewing cycle. For example, it has various indicators that inform users when to refill the water tank and descale the entire brewing circuit. Again, this is something that Terra Kaffe doesn’t present with its minimalist system.

Philips 3200 vs Terra Kaffe: Similarities

Check out these 3 similarities between Philips 3200 and Terra Kaffe!

Adjustable spout

With an adjustable spout, you can avoid the messy splashing of coffee and milk around the kitchen counter. With Philips 3200, the cup clearance is up to 5.7 inches, while Terra Kaffe is compatible with cups as tall as 5.5 inches.

Conical burr grinder

Both devices are equipped with a conical burr grinder, the one that I consider the most stable, durable, and home-use-friendly on the market right now. So, I have high expectations of the real performance of these grinders. And meeting my expectations, they did! The grinders are powerful, not noisy, and consistent.

Modern plastic frame

The frame of these machines is both made almost entirely of plastic. So they are lightweight but still durable enough. Nevertheless, I would prefer a stainless steel frame that is less prone to damage, especially with Terra Kaffe since it’s quite an expensive mid-range machine.
