DeLonghi Eletta vs Saeco Xelsis: Why You Should Choose One Of These Espresso Machines

I get commissions for purchases made through links in this post. Read more

If you are looking for a super-automatic espresso machine, you can’t miss my verdict for te debate of DeLonghi Eletta vs Saeco Xelsis. Both are formidable mid-range choices, but one has more sophisticated capabilities, making it a better option for both novice and expert users. And that model is Saeco Xelsis.

Both machines effortlessly provide excellent espresso. You may quickly transition from bean to cup with the help of personalized coffees and preset features. However, the Saeco Xelsis has a simple yet modern design with the AquaClean filter, a stunning automated milk frother, and quicker cleaning capabilities.

The excellent coffee grinder in the DeLonghi Eletta operates quietly and in various settings. As a result, it’s the finest option for users seeking complex adjustments for their coffee requirements. However, it lacks the color display that Saeco Xelsis has, and its dual boiler isn’t as potent as Xelsis’s dual Thermoblock.

DeLonghi Eletta vs Saeco Xelsis: Differences

Saeco Xelsis wins 3-1 and ties once against DeLonghi Eletta thanks to its more elaborate one-touch beverages, cleaning system, and dual Thermoblock’s efficiency. Delonghi Eletta also is a good choice for both beginners and intermediate users. But compared to Saeco Xelsis, it doesn’t have as advanced technologies.

Grinder Type

Winner: DeLonghi Eletta

DeLonghi Eletta is equipped with a ceramic conical burr grinder, which is slightly different from Saeco Xelsis’s flat ceramic burr grinder. There are pros and cons to each type.

The first advantage that these grinder types share is the material. Ceramic is a very recommendable material for making whole bean grinders. Ceramic doesn’t conduct heat well, so it doesn’t warm up too much and further roasts the coffee beans, bringing out the bitter flavor more. Ceramic burr also has a good lifespan and consistency. The grind teeth don’t become blunt as easily as steel blades.

Regarding the differences between Delonghi Eletta and Saeco Xelsis’ grinders, some would say the flat shape is better, while other claim that the conical shape is more stable. Here is the truth: the conical shape naturally avoids jamming because the coffee grind falls down easier during the grinding process, leaving the grinder’s teeth free from bits and lumps. But, the flat grinder also is impressive because it tends to deliver finer and more even ground.

So, there is a trade-off here that users must consider. As for me, I highly suggest both types, but favoring the conical shape more due to its consistency in the long run.

Milk frother

Tie

Regarding the milk frothing aspect, I have no complaints. This pair does a phenomenal job at delivering microfoam for different beverages. The foam texture is noticeably drier and airier with latte macchiato or cappuccino. For a latte or flat white, I can get a creamier milk texture, just like the original recipe is. Overall, the adaptation is very good, even though I don’t have much control over the milk texture.

Programmability

Winner: Saeco Xelsis

What follows will appeal to new coffee consumers. Up to 15 pre-programmed coffee drinks are available with the Saeco Xelsis. To adjust the espresso’s intensity, you also have 5 intriguing aroma options, 6 user profiles, and 3 practical temperature settings.

The list of drinks that Xelsis can make at the touch of a button is long: espresso, coffee, caffe latte, flat white, cappuccino, latte macchiato, espresso macchiato, ristretto, espresso doppio, espresso lungo, Americano, cafe au lait, froth milk, warm milk, hot water.

Contrarily, the DeLonghi Eletta has just 9 beverages, and the same 6 user profiles. The Saeco Xelsis provides additional specialty beverages for espresso drinkers as a result. So, in additionally to the traditional milk drinks like macchiato, latte, cappuccino, flat white, etc., you may enjoy coffee and espresso beverages.

Cleaning System

Winner: Saeco Xelsis

The Saeco Xelsis has a distinctive and powerful HygieClean feature that I truly enjoy. To remove any milk stains or grains lodged inside the machine, users can put the milk tube in the slot of HygieClean at the side of the machine, and it will automatically purge the steam pipe and the complete milk system. It’s very convenient and will avoid bacteria formation inside the entire milk path.

Additionally, Xelsis has an AquaClean filter in the water tank that eliminates pollutants like odor and heavy metals from the water.

A typical soft water filter is included with the DeLonghi Eletta to remove limescale and odor. Additionally, it has the proper descaling and auto-rinsing functions. However, you must routinely descale the machine, which takes time, unlike the Saeco Xelsis with its AquaClean filter.

Heating element

Winner: Saeco Xelsis

With the push of a button, Saeco Incanti’s dual Thermoblock allows it to brew up to 2 cups of espresso simultaneously with optimum water temperature. Additionally, it shortens the machine’s brewing time without sacrificing the temperature of the drinks, which might produce weak coffee.

For Saeco Xelsis to heat up, it takes about 30-60s. As for Delonghi Eletta, I suggest leaving it on for at least 1-2 minutes for optimum brewing temperature. It should take at least 60s for Eletta to warm up anyway.

Additionally, they both raise the water’s temperature to 160–166 degrees F. For making thick espresso, this temperature range is optimal. Thermoblock is less cumbersome and heavier to handle, and it is also more energy-efficient. Because of this, both espresso machines are portable and lightweight for use at home.

DeLonghi Eletta vs Saeco Xelsis: Similarities

There aren’t many similarities between Delonghi Eletta and Saeco Xelsis, so I will highlight those I find most important.

Clean/ descale indicators

These models have an indicator system that notifies users when cleaning or descaling the machines is time. This will help users not have to keep up with the cleaning schedule constantly. If you usually brew espresso or latte, purchase machines that come with an alert system for things like this, and other conditions like an empty drip tray, full dreg drawer, empty bean hopper, empty water tank, etc.

Front-pull water tank

Delonghi and Gaggia equip these machines with front-pull water tanks, which help saves a lot of top and backspace. You don’t have to place these devices on an open kitchen stand or space in general.
