Jura J6 Vs S8: Key Differences

The Jura J6 wins (4 – 3) against the E8. There is not much difference between these two models, except that the winner has a larger water tank and offers more specialty drinks but doesn’t have a touchscreen like the other.

ESPRESSO TASTE

The Winner: Tie

Grinder

One of the factors I always consider first when reviewing automatic coffee machines is the grinder, since it plays an essential role in the overall espresso taste.

Both of these machines are fitted with an Aroma G3 grinder, which is Jura’s top-tier conical steel burr grinder. Personally, I prefer the ceramic grinder as they don’t overheat and risk burning the coffee beans, but there is no denying that Aroma G3 is still a fine setup- especially.

This grinder can grind up the beans lightning fast—about two times faster than the G2,  its predecessor—while still preserving delicious espresso aromas. Better yet, it produces consistent coffee grounds and is very quiet when operating, which I appreciate first thing in the morning.

These machines also give you seven grind settings to choose from, so you have plenty of flexibility to determine what works best for you. I recommend only changing the grind setting while the grinder is running, because this is better for the longevity of the machine. Also, avoid using oily beans since they can cause integrated grinders to clog.

Heating System

Both of these units are integrated with a single Thermoblock as a heating system to heat the machine within 10 seconds. This is quite lackluster as it does not allow you to heat and steam simultaneously as a dual-boiler system does.

That means you will have to wait for the milk to heat up separately when making milk-based drinks, which is quite inconvenient if you want to entertain your guests with a large batch of drinks.

Pulse Extraction Process (P.E.P.) Brewing Technology

Jura has equipped the P.E.P technology on both machines to the exquisite taste of the espresso they produce. It puls jets of hot water through the coffee ground at intervals, ensuring every trace of flavor is extracted.

MILK SYSTEM

The Winner: Jura J6

If you adore milk-based drinks, you can’t go wrong with both Jura J6 and S8.

Let’s start with the former first. It features the interchangeable milk pipe and spout and Fine Foam technology, making it easier to brew your favorite milk specialties with the nice microfoam. All you need to do is push a button.

Plus, this machine has a small storage compartment for the milk parts. This is a nice-to-have thing, even if it means extra cleaning.

Generally, the J6’s milk system is standard and easy to use, so there is no learning curve waiting for you ahead. Just pick your settings and let the machine do the hard work.

The milk frothing system of the S8 is not significantly different from the J6’s, and I was also satisfied with the quality of the milk foam this machine produced. But it doesn’t have a milk container, which is unacceptable given the price tag of this machine.

Of course, you can always buy separate milk accessories from Jura, like thermally insulated containers, to keep your milk at the desired temperature. But with the over $2500 that I spent on this machine, I want everything included in the box.

UTILITIES

The Winner: Tie

Now is the time to clear the query, “Jura J6 vs S8, which one has more features?” My short answer is almost no.

The two share almost every feature and utility, including an integrated steel burr grinder, hot water system, frother, water level indicator, self-cleaning program, and so on.

What’s more, the menu of beverages of J6 and S8 includes 13 and 15 preset drinks, respectively. This does not make a noticeable difference.

Last but not least, they are also packed with exclusive and state-of-the-art Jura technologies, such as P.E.P technology and JURA Fine Foam, to give you the most flavorful espresso.

CAPACITY

The Winner: Jura J6

Regarding water tank capacity, the J6 takes the lead with its giant 71-ounce water reservoir, while the S8 can only hold up to 64 ounces of water.

What the S8 has in its favor is that it has a larger bean hopper, which is up to 9.8 ounces, while the J6’s is 8.8 ounces. But a one-ounce gap doesn’t make a significant difference, right?

What makes a dramatic difference between these babies here is their milk tanks. The Jura J6 is fitted with a built-in milk container, while its counterpart does not.

DESIGN & CONVENIENCE

The Jura J8’s touch screen.

The Winner: Jura J8

At first glance, these machines seem like twins because they have pretty similar designs. They have a built-in display, double spouts, and a milk frother. If I have to pinpoint any noticeable difference, it must be the location of the frother. It stays on the left of the S8, but on the right of the J6.

If you look closely, you’ll know that the S8 has a touchscreen while its competitor doesn’t. In other words, the Jura S8 lets you customize the coffee volume and strength by touching, while the other allows you to adjust them via buttons. Of course, I favor the touch screen since it offers more convenience than buttons.

In terms of dimensions, the J6 measures 13.5 x 17 x 11.2 inches and weighs 24 pounds, whereas its counterpart has a dimension of 12.7 x 20.1 x 16.7 inches with a weight of 22 pounds.

As you can see, the measurements are roughly the same between the two espresso makers. So what determines the winner in this round is the touch screen, which means I give the nod to Jura J8 here.

Jura J6 Vs S8: Similarities

SPOUT HEIGHT

jura s8's double spout
Jura S8’s double spout

These coffee makers sport double spouts, allowing you to brew two cups simultaneously. Better yet, their spouts are height adjustable, a common feature of super-automatic machines.

The faucets of the S8 and J6 can be raised up to 4.6 inches and 4.4 inches, respectively. So most glasses and mugs will fit under there. Many insulated coffee cups would be fine as well.

The former’s spout can be lowered to 2.8 inches, while the other’s can be dropped to 2.6 inches, enabling you to preserve the pillowy, thick crema created by the P.E.P. technology. Moreover, it will prevent unnecessary splashes.

One thing I didn’t like about the J6’s spouts was that they are very close together, so you must choose two slender cups to fit underneath each spout.

APP

You can control these units remotely by connecting them to your smartphone/tablet via the J.O.E app. I’d like to say this app is pretty cool because it allows me to prepare espresso, adjust settings and keep an eye on processes without leaving my sofa.

This app is also compatible with Apple Watch to help you save up to three coffee specialties. That way, you can make coffee with a tap of your wrist!
