Delonghi Dinamica Plus Vs Primadonna Class: Which Mid-Range Espresso Maker Is Better

I get commissions for purchases made through links in this post. Read more

The Delonghi Dinamica Plus is the best mid-range super-automatic machine. It’s been nearly two years since my first review of the DeLonghi Dinamica super-automatic machine. Since then, it has won almost every head-to-head comparison, and the battle between Delonghi Dinamica Plus vs Primadonna Class comparison is no exception.

The Dinamica Plus won my heart with its ease of use and cleaning, while the automatic milk frothing was also consistently good. The Primadonna Class can handle espresso and milk texture like a beast, but it’s slightly noisy when brewing and frothing and less stable than my winner.

Delonghi Dinamica Plus vs Primadonna Class: Key Differences

Delonghi Dinamica Plus defeats Primadonna Class by a score of 3 to 1. The former machine won me over with its consistency and ease of use. With it, you can make a high-quality espresso just like a skilled barista at the touch of a button rather than having to learn any skills.

COFFEE FLAVOR

The winner: Tie

Grinder

These machines share a conical steel grinder. From my experience, their grinders worked well without causing jams or other serious problems.

The only problem is that these grinders will overheat if used continuously to brew from cup to cup, which can affect the taste of the espresso more or less. This is the downside of any model equipped with a conical steel grinder.

Regarding noise level, the Dinamica Plus is better at minimizing noise during the entire extraction process, allowing you to receive delicious coffee cups without waking the whole family up early in the morning.

On the flip side, the Prima Donna Class is noisy when frothing milk and brewing espresso. It’s not a big deal to a single guy like me, but I wouldn’t recommend it if you have small kids.

The Dinamica Plus has 13 grinder levels, while the Primadonna Class has seven settings. More settings allow you to adjust the strength and flavor of coffee more freely. Seven is also a good number on the Prima Donna Class—not 3 or 4, as is typically the case with this brand, especially with machines in the lower-price ranges.

Dosing and Tamping

These machines are super-automatic, which will offer you a totally hands-free experience. The dosing and tamping processes are automatic as well. They will grind, dose, and tamp an exact amount of beans for a specific recipe.

Heating System

The Dinamica Plus has a dual boiler, while its counterpart is equipped with an integrated thermoblock.

The Primadonna Class brews hotter cups but is less stable than the Primadonna Class. Meanwhile, the espresso is not hot enough, even when I set the Dinamica Plus to the highest possible temperature. Therefore, I tried to warm my cup with some hot water before emptying it when ready to brew, and it worked!

The Dinamica Plus can keep both espresso and milk hot but not too hot, suitable for enjoying right out of the tap. With the help of the cup warming tray, you can keep your drinks hot even longer.

MILK SYSTEM

The Winner: Delonghi Dinamica Plus

I have nothing to complain about the milk systems of both machines, as they have been performing equally smoothly for me since the first day of testing. These super-automatic systems also allowed me to change the milk foam texture at will.

I have found that they are great at making dry foam for beverages like latte macchiato or cappuccinos, which require a lot of airy microfoam. Their carafes can also handle creamy milk, but it seems to have a bit of a fluffy and dry texture in lieu of being totally creamy.

The only factor that made the Dinamica Plus win this round is that it is less picky when talking about the milk type. It can handle both traditional and alternative milk types, while its competitor mainly works with skimmed milk.

CLEANING AND MAINTENANCE

The Winner: Delonghi Dinamica Plus

Like other super-automatic espresso machines, some cleaning between uses is essential to avoid buildup, spoilage, and clogging. Cleaning coffee machines is often a real nightmare for many people, but this is not the case with the Dinamica Plus and Primadonna Class.

I found it easier to clean the Dinamica Plus. Nothing is officially allowed to go in a dishwasher, but I believe it is possible to put the carafe, the drip tray, and the coffee grounds container in your dishwasher. The brew path was rinsed automatically.

The Primadonna Class, on the other hand, shares almost the same cleaning cycles. But it only rinses parts where the milk goes through automatically after each brewing session rather than the entire brew path, making it less convenient than the winner.

Delonghi Dinamica Plus Vs Primadonna Class: Similarities

UTILITIES

Water Tank Capacity

The water tank capacities of the Dinamica Plus and Primadonna Class are 60 and 67.6 ounces, respectively. There’s a difference here, but they’re all standard water tank capacities, ideal for big households and small offices.

Moreover, these tanks have a line indicating the maximum water level you should fill to avoid leaking.

Touch Screen

the primadonna class's convenient touch screen
The Delonghi Primadonna Class’s convenient touchscreen

A beautiful 3.5-inch touchscreen is included on both machines instead of the usual sensory control panel. It quickly walked me through the setup and was intuitive to use, displaying different specialty coffees. It reminds me of screens on higher-end coffee machines from Jura.

Remote Control

The pair can be connected to your smartphone or tablet via the Coffee Link app, allowing you to save your favorite coffee recipes that can’t be done via the machine.

I found it very easier to adjust drinks through this application than on the machine. Preparing coffee via the app is possible, but you must be near your machine to ensure a cup is placed under the spout.

You can use the app to turn on the machine, which is very useful in the mornings because it lets you turn it on from your bed. Regarding preparing a beverage with ground coffee, such as decaf drinks, I couldn’t find an option to choose ground coffee when preparing drinks.

Quick Rundown of Delonghi Dinamica Plus
