By the looks of it, the Jura A1 does seem like a nice upgrade to the Jura ENA 1. The A1 offers the PEP technology and 4 more levels of grinder adjustment. But the ENA 1 is more compact, lightweight which makes it easier to use in a narrower kitchen.

Both machines Jura ENA 1 vs A1 are the same feature-set including the coffee customizations, aroma levels, and shot quality. They also have much the same energy-efficient features for keeping the machine from burning out or getting overheated.

The fact that you can use fresh coffee beans in each plus the ability to brew ground coffee with the by-pass doser is also a nice addition.

While this makes things trickier to evaluate the winner between Jura ENA 1 vs A1, I’ve highlighted a few key considerations that stand out between the two. Have a look at those before you make your decision.

Jura ENA Micro 1 vs A1: Differences

There’s no doubt that the Jura ENA 1 vs A1 isn’t both great super-automatic espresso makers. But comparing which espresso machine has more (or better) features that directly impact espresso quality and performance, it’s the Jura A1 that is the winner here (2 – 1) against Jura ENA 1.

1. Taste of Espresso

The Winner: Jura A1

Coffee Grinder

The Jura ENA 1 features a multi-level coffee grinder, the Aroma+ grinder. It has a conical shape that is compact, sturdy, and adjustable down to multiple levels. It makes 3 drinks with 3 level adjustments.

I wouldn’t say that the Jura ENA 1 has the quietest coffee grinder so far. And in comparison to the Jura A1, it is slightly louder. It’s also not very durable in the long run.

The Jura A1’s coffee grinder is the Aroma G3 and it’s a burr grinder. Coffee purists say that the A1’s grinder is one of the fastest that Jura has ever designed. And it offers 7 levels of adjustment, which is 4 more than the Jura ENA 1.

Paired with PEP technology, the grinding and brewing mechanism of the Jura A1 is more barista-inspired and authentic.

The quality of the espresso is smooth, has more crema, and is richer for consistent cup after cup of brewing. And it’s easier to clean and maintain, considering the Aroma seal on top of the bean hopper to keep the beans fresh for longer.

Pulse Extraction Process

While the Jura ENA 1 and A1 have more similarities than differences, it is the PEP technology that is their major brush-off against each other. This is a superior espresso extraction technology that maintains a smooth, consistent, and rich brewing experience for home users.

The Jura ENA Micro 1 does not have PEP while the Jura A1 does. But both coffee makers can brew 3 different variations of espresso – Ristretto, Espresso, and Coffee.

However, there is a minor difference in flavour, most importantly in the level and intensity of the crema production between an espresso made from the ENA 1 and the A1 – favouring the skill and fineness of the A1 with PEP technology.

2. Convenience / Maintenance

The Winner: Jura A1

Programmable Timer

A programmable timer works like an automatic timer that you can set to shut off the machine in order to save power. Again, the Jura A1 has it and the Jura ENA Micro 1 doesn’t.

This does take away some level of convenience because a programmable shut-off timer is an energy-efficient feature. And most modern super-automatic espresso machines have it.

For cleaning and maintenance, the Jura A1 offers an advantage over the Jura ENA 1. Because this means you don’t have to go back to the machine to turn it off. It will do so automatically after a set time period.

3. Size / Capacity

The Winner: Jura ENA Micro 1

Jura Ena Micro 1 Size
Jura Ena Micro 1 Size

Speaking of keeping things nice and tidy, the Jura ENA 1 has a smaller bean hopper capacity than the Jura A1. It comes with a 4.4-ounce bean hopper, while the Jura A1 has a 7 ounce.

This does mean that the Jura ENA 1 is more compact and portable to use.  The smaller size does not change the fact that the Jura ENA 1 keeps the coffee beans fresh and moisture-free. Both have the same water tank capacity which is great.

There exists no difference between the two in the coffee pucks drawer. The Jura ENA 1 collects up to 9 used coffee pucks. So does the Jura A1. With the same height, depth, and width measurements as well.

Jura ENA Micro 1 vs A1: Similarities

1. Control Panel

Both espresso machines come with a TFT display with symbols and a touchscreen interface. You can quickly choose your coffee drinks, aroma levels, and other programmable settings. Both machines are literally one-touch with fast heat-up time and delivery.

Speaking of which…

2. Thermoblock Heating System

The Jura ENA 1 and A1 have a Thermoblock boiler system which is fast and efficient. Paired with the Zero-Energy switch (present on both machines), the machine uses power only to heat up the water temperature and the rest is well-regulated to avoid wastage of extra energy.

They also share a 15 bar pump system that keeps the espresso flavour strong and consistent no matter how many times you brew coffee. You’ll hardly have to wait between cups too!

3. Water Filter

The Jura offers 2 most popular water filters for quick and effective use. In the Jura ENA 1, you have the easy-to-replace and maintain Claris water filter. The Jura A1 features the Clearyl water filter. Both are compelling water filters with accurate and long-standing results.

Even for someone making 4-6 cups of espresso in a day, the cleaning tablets that the Jura provides do the job of cleaning the internal parts of the machine well.

Both have certain smart indicators for cleaning and descaling to help you maintain the machine better.

4. Customizations

As I’ve already mentioned, the Jura ENA 1 and A1 have the same level of customization with regards to brewing coffee. So you can program the machine to a piping hot cup of Ristretto, Lungo, and Espresso.

Speaking of which, both machines come with a separate by-pass doser for pre-ground coffee. They also feature 2 Aroma levels for altering how strong you want the espresso. And moving on, they also accommodate different cup sizes from 2 to 5.5 inches.
