Delonghi Magnifica S vs Breville Barista Express: Which One Brews Tastier Coffee?

I get commissions for purchases made through links in this post. Read more

In the Delonghi Magnifica S vs Breville Barista Express debate, we have finally decided on the true winner. Suppose you are looking for an affordable espresso machine with low pressure pre-infusion that brews rich and aromatic coffee with different bursts of flavor. In that case, Breville Barista Express is the one you should pick.

Breville Barista Express is a classic pick among the modern fully-automatic espresso machines for home use. It boasts PID temperature control that keeps the water temperature in check each second it passes through the coffee grind. Also, it controls the noise better than what Delonghi Magnifica S can. Barista Express’s performance will satisfy your love for good coffee, especially if you are a beginner with these machines.

Delonghi Magnifica S, despite being a decent model, isn’t my favorite. With the price that comes with this device, I expected its hands-on brewing technique and additional features to be impressive or at least stable. And the result? The flavor, noise control, stability in extraction, etc., are up to standard but not suitable for the device’s price tag.

Delonghi Magnifica S Vs Breville Barista Express: Differences

After putting the features on a scale for an accurate comparison, Breville Barista Express wins 3-2 against Delonghi Magnifica S! Barista Express boasts better value for the price with a more stable espresso extraction program and potent adjustable conical burr grinder with various texture levels. Don’t miss my detailed review below!

Heating element

Winner: Breville Barista Express

The Breville model is designed with a Thermocoil heating element with PID temperature control technology that brews the coffee at exactly 200 degrees F (give or take). After testing the theory, I can say that the real-life functionality of this model doesn’t stray far from its advertisement. The temperature that I pull runs around 195-200°F, which is ideal for espresso extraction (I’m not fond of too hot water because the coffee tastes burnt and lacks a sweet note).

As for Delonghi Magnifica S’s model is equipped with a Thermoblock heating element. In fact, the overall temperature is quite good. In this aspect, Delonghi doesn’t lose to Breville by a long shot. Still, the Thermoblock system sustains more risk of malfunctioning in the long run, and leaking is a major possibility. With its price tag, I think Delonghi should have designed a better heating system for the Magnifica S.

Another point worth mentioning is that Barista Express warms up slightly quicker than the Delonghi Magnifica S. It takes 30 seconds to complete the start-up cycle, while the latter needs around 45 seconds. So, in this round of Delonghi Magnifica S vs Breville Barista Express, the later wins completely.

Flavor control

Winner: Breville Barista Express

Regarding flavor control, Breville Barista Express wins easily for me. The machine comes with a low-pressure pre-infusion feature that augments the pump pressure gradually so that the hot water can sip through the coffee ground evenly, extracting all the flavor notes with balance. That’s the theory.

And the result? For me, the flavor meets the expectation. The espresso shots are full-bodied, deep in flavor, and sweet with a shot of bitterness. Taste-wise, it delivers the true soul of the coffee beans. What I even enjoy more is that the machine can also work with oil-infused beans. You can grind flavored beans with higher oil content without jamming the grinder and running the flavor.

Nevertheless, Barista Express won’t be in my top 5 picks for oily bean extraction simply because it doesn’t bring out the added flavor to the fullest. But, with its price range, I think it’s 100% understandable.

Water tank position

Winner: Delonghi Magnifica S

Convenience is the key whenever we purchase any type of home appliance. And the water tank position is an aspect to consider. For me, Delonghi Magnifica S is much more convenient to refill. You can locate it on the right side of the machine and pull it out upfront. The position is strategic because it allows you to fit the device as close to a wall as possible without worrying that the removal of the tank will scratch it.

As for Breville Barista Express, the tank is located in the back, and if you want to remove it, you have to pull it upward. This requires space behind the back of the machine. Nevertheless, daily refilling isn’t that complicated. You can simply open the lid of the tank and pour water in.

Milk foam quality

Winner: Delonghi Magnifica S

Delonghi Magnifica S delivers better micro-foam texture, and you can manually adjust and decide if you want foamy or creamy milk. This will allow you to make a latte, latte macchiato, or cappuccino to your liking.

As for Breville Barista Express, the milk texture is definitely less airy, and it leans toward the creamy side, which means the machine is mostly designed for making a latte, flat white, or mocha with steamed milk instead of milk foam.

Which one suits your preference more? For me, the steam wand of the first model is more to my taste. But if you aren’t a fan of dry milk foam, which may appear messier to clean for some coffee drinkers, Barista Express should be a better pick for you.

Noise control

Winner: Breville Barista Express

First, I want to note that both devices aren’t designed with a professional noise control system, so the noise that the two machines cause is my personal experience that may not apply to all devices of the same product line.

Breville Barista Express is quieter
Breville Barista Express is quieter

For me, the grinder of Breville Barista Express is more stable and quiet. Of course, we can’t expect a fully-automatic espresso machine with an integrated grinder to be sleep-train-baby-friendly. It will make noise to a certain level. But the Breville model has been much more pleasant for me compared to Delonghi Magnifica S, which produces loud clacking sounds when grinding beans.

Delonghi Magnifica S Vs Breville Barista Express: Similarities

Alongside the evident differences, Delonghi Magnifica S and Breville Barista Express also share some similar features. What are those? Find out more about these pleasant similarities!

Compact design

Both machines are designed to serve 2-3 users daily. They aren’t made for large parties, but I imagine this shouldn’t be a disadvantage for them, given their compact design and clear purpose of serving only a small group. They will fit in any corner or counter of your kitchen.

Ergonomy

Quick and convenient coffee brewing is what modern espresso machines strive for. And for these models, you must press the button to choose between single or double espresso.

You can also adjust the quantity of espresso that comes out, and their smart systems will remember this information for future brews.

To clean these espresso machines quickly, pressing a combination of buttons will do the job. The process will be specified clearer in the manual that comes with the product. But with Barista Express, you generally only have to press the single and double espresso buttons at the same time as the power button for 5 seconds to trigger the cleaning process. For the Delonghi one, pressing the descaling button will start the cleaning process, just without descale solution.
