Nothing is more difficult than contrasting two items that are too similar to one another, such as the Delonghi EC155 vs EC155M. So let me explain the subtle distinctions that make one of these twin coffee makers superior to the other if you are torn between them.

EC155M has the same exterior design as EC155. As a result, it’s hard to encounter even a small detail that differentiates the 2 machines from each other, except for the design of the dials on top of the machines. But, EC155M excels thanks to its diluted vibration and noise. And it doesn’t fail when it comes to extracting delicious espresso and frothing dry foam.

As for EC155, it boasts of almost every good point that EC155M has, but its lack of secure mounting makes the extraction process noisy and a little messy.

Delonghi EC155 vs EC155M: Difference

Delonghi EC155M wins 1-0 and ties twice against EC155. The pair brews equally good espresso, but the vibration and noise are much more noticeable with EC155. I will give you the full details below!

Espresso extraction and technique

Tie

+ Temperature

Both EC155M and EC155 are good at extracting espresso, but the results depend greatly on various factors, the temperature is one of which. Being equipped with a single boiler heating system, surely many users would think they won’t be efficient enough to handle consecutive brewing and steaming.

But, the single boilers are accompanied by dual thermostats that assist each brewing and steaming purpose, making it quicker to switch between steps while not dropping temperature.

I have brewed many cups of latte with these machines, and I must say they do equally well. The espresso tastes delicious and has a nice layer of crema. For their price, I’m impressed by what they have to offer.

+ Brewing technique

Both machines extract espresso using a 15-bar pump pressure that efficiently brings out the best flavor notes possible. This feature is the reason behind EC155M and EC155’s velvety crema that I mentioned above. Overall, there is nothing I don’t like about their brewing technique.

But I want to give you some tips. Since these models are semi-automatic, they require users to manually control the dosing and tamping. On the right side of the devices, you can see a built-in tamper, which we have to push the puck upward to it to tamp. My advice: Ignore that one and get yourself a real separate tamper for an ultimately even puck.

As for dosing, don’t go longer than 25-30s before turning the knob because it will significantly water down the shot and adds bitter flavor.

Milk frother

Tie

The steam wands of EC155M and EC155 work the same. However, there are things that I like and don’t like about them.

On the good side, these wands are very powerful, and they can froth from creamy to dry foam depending on how many seconds we leave the milk pitcher with the wands. It doesn’t take more than 1 minute to achieve the driest milk texture.

However, reaching the milk pitcher’s bottom is challenging due to the short wand design. The wands also have a bulky shape, making maneuvering the milk pitcher harder, especially when there is lots of milk in the container.

Noise and vibration

Winner: Delonghi EC155M

Delonghi EC155M is much quieter than EC155. Despite having an identical frame design, EC155M’s mounting seems much more secure. Thus, it vibrates less and produces less noise. On the contrary, EC155 appears to need help keeping the vibration subtle. It shakes so vigorously that my cup practically runs around the drip tray.

Delonghi EC155 vs EC155M: Similarities

Choosing one of these two reasonably priced entry-level coffee makers has several advantages. See my justification below.

Controls

The machines’ buttons and dials don’t feel fragile or cheap. On the contrary, they are reliable and simple to get to. Since both devices are largely automated and require one or two button presses to produce great espresso consistently, there is little to learn.

Size

Both are elegant and tiny in terms of size. They only occupy a little counter space. When not in use, you may tuck them away in a corner. I often do that because I only have a little counter space to begin with.

Delonghi EC155M has a small footprint
Delonghi EC155M has a small footprint

Both machines include a detachable water tank and water level indications in keeping with their compactness. You may remove it as needed for cleaning or refilling. And in a split second, it pops back on. The ability to automatically generate rich, flavorful espresso is the best thing an appliance as small as the EC155M or EC155 can do. That is exactly what they do.

  • Note: 1)Too coarse a grind, too little coffee, or insufficiently tamping the grounds before brewing can all lead to inadequate pressure for a proper brew. 2)It is important to note that the amount of espresso extracted will vary depending on the grind size and amount and reprogramming may be needed when the size and amount are adjusted
