Let’s say that you are a first-time espresso maker and looking for an affordable automatic espresso machine; then you should not miss out on these two models, the Delonghi EC155 vs EC685M. In this article, we will determine which one is better for your needs. But for a quick answer, I would say the winner is the EC685M, and the EC155 is the runner-up.
While sharing many similar features with the opponent, like the manual steam, the 15-bar pressure pump, and the user-friendly interface, the EC685M is more compact and quieter. It also integrates more utilities and automatic functions than its competition.
Meanwhile, the EC155 has a reasonable price and is familiar to beginners. It still features all the aspects of a manual automatic espresso machine, and its milk foam is absolutely great for cappuccinos or lattes.

Delonghi EC155 vs EC685M: Differences
In the debate over which is the best manual automatic espresso machine, the EC685M wins 4-0 and ties 1 against the EC155. The machine offers better coffee flavor, a brewing technique, and an attractive design that makes less noise and vibration. Read the breakdown below to learn the details
espresso extraction and technique
The winner: Delonghi EC685M
Heating system
To begin with, let’s jump into the first difference between these two manual automatic machines. While EC155 comes with a single boiler, EC685M employs a single thermoblock.
With the EC685M, the typical benefit of a thermoblock heating system is the ability to save energy and heat up quickly. Actually, this device can brew espresso in around 40 seconds. For a super entry-level machine and an under $200 price, this feature sounds great, right?
As for the EC155, the stainless steel single boiler provides a relatively stable heat supply and is highly durable. However, the boiler size is quite small, and it can take 15 minutes to get ready for the first shot. But don’t get frustrated; you just need to turn on the machine and let it preheat on its own. During this time, do your other things; the machine will memo you when it is ready to brew or steam when the light turns green.
One point to note in both machines is that you need to cool down the boiler after brewing or steaming. To illustrate, on the Dedica Deluxe, the machine will give you a warning sign that it’s overheated already after making two cups of coffee. Then you can easily fix this problem just by running the machine with water for about 5 seconds. With EC155, you also need to perform the same operation, but it will take a bit longer.
Brewing technique
Both machines use a 15-bar pump pressure to produce the best coffee flavor possible. With this pair, the espresso tastes actually good, while the crema layer is not thick but creamy and smooth as well.
About dosing, let’s talk about the portafilter. On the DeLonghi EC155, the 3-in-1 portafilter allows you to brew single or double espresso shots or use it for ESE pods. Meanwhile, the EC685M also lets you easily modify the quantity of coffee delivered into your cup. There are two buttons with illustrations on top corresponding to one-shot and two-shot for you to choose from. Moreover, this machine offers an Automatic Flow Stop feature to decide the right volume and stop providing coffee automatically.
Besides, with the Dedica, you have three brew temperature control options, including low, medium, and high. As for my experience, the high level works best, and it approaches the ideal espresso temperature.
milk system
Tie
To be frank, there is not too much difference between Delonghi EC155 vs De’longhi EC685M in this aspect. The steam wands of both of these machines work the same way, which is particularly user-friendly. The foam is rich and creamy, but it is more suitable for cappuccinos and lattes than flat whites.
A tip that I learned from testing milk on both machines is that before dunking the steam wand in the milk jug, flush out all the remaining water from the heated wand. This is important if you don’t want that extra water to ruin your milk foam.
noise and vibration
The winner: Delonghi EC685M
The noise is another aspect that many users are concerned about, including me. However, as you know, they’re manual automatic espresso machines, so making a little noise is trivial. For example, how is it possible to foam milk with a steam wand without making any noise?
In my opinion, the EC155 is louder than the Dedica Deluxe, but it is not loud enough to wake up anyone.
In addition, while using the device, you will notice that the EC155 vibrates slightly and sometimes move your cup from its original position on the drip tray.
design
The winner: Delonghi EC685M
A plus point for both machines is their compact design and portability. They will only take up a small counter space in your kitchen, and you can easily store them in a corner when not in use. They all also include a removable water tank, water level indications, and a removable drip tray.
Personally, I prefer the design of the EC685M because it is more compact and made mainly of stainless steel, while its opponent has a plastic body. Moreover, with the EC685M, the maximum cup height is 120 mm, while the EC155 is only 66 mm.
Value of money
If you’re a beginner to an espresso machine and looking for a device with a low budget, I highly recommend you consider Delonghi EC155 vs Delonghi EC685M.
With EC155, it’s straightforward to use. Its user interface is easy to operate; its design is compact, it produces great espresso and creamy milk foam, and it has many other small utilities that I have not yet mentioned in this article. To me, this machine is right for its price.
As for the EC685M, this machine includes some features that you can’t find in its competition while its price is lower. In addition to providing the same features as the EC155 that I listed above, this machine also offers you many other utilities, such as temperature control options, auto turn-off, and automatic flow stop.
