If you’re in the market for a new single-serve coffee maker, you’ve probably come across the Breville Nespresso Vertuo vs DeLonghi Vertuo Next. Both are good machines that use Nespresso’s Vertuo coffee capsules. So, how do you choose between the two? In this article, I’ll take a look at the two brands side-by-side to see which one comes out on top.

The Breville Nespresso Vertuo is a single-serve model with many features and benefits that make it a better choice than the DeLonghi Vertuo Next. For starters, it is relatively more powerful, meaning that it can heat water faster and produce espresso with more crema. In addition, it is built to last longer and has fewer durability issues, making it a better value for money overall.

The DeLonghi Vertuo Next is the runner-up with some interesting functions to consider. It is a more compact machine, making it a good choice for small kitchens. Vertuo Next brews the coffee at a slightly lower pressure than its counterpart, which may produce a less intense flavor. However, it’s still easy to use and offers consistently good coffee.

Breville Nespresso Vertuo vs DeLonghi Vertuo Next: Differences

Breville Nespresso Vertuo wins 3-1 against DeLonghi Vertuo Next. In addition to creating better-tasting espresso, Breville Vertuo warms up more rapidly and is simple to clean and maintain. I will go over each aspect to help you understand clearly.

Flavor

Winner: Breville Nespresso Vertuo

Both Breville Nespresso Vertuo and DeLonghi Vertuo Next machines feature Centrifusion technology for brewing coffee. When the machine is activated, the capsule spins up to 7,000 rotations per minute – blending coffee grounds with water to produce crema. This enables you to make various flavored coffees with consistent results.

Although many coffee consumers may find this method to be effective, there are still certain restrictions. I will give further details below.

  • Coffee temperature

After testing Breville Nespresso Vertuo Vs DeLonghi Vertuo Next machines, I hoped their brewing temperature would satisfy an American taste, but it ended up tasting like European coffee. To be honest, it really doesn’t suit my needs.

You may know that higher temperature makes it easier to add syrups and mix-ins without cooling the coffee down too much. However, these two machines only seem to get up to around 160F. That’s desirable enough to enjoy drinking, but adding mix-ins like cream or ice cream drastically reduces the temperature.

In an attempt to resolve this, I’ve started rinsing my mug out with boiling water before adding my coffee. This way can enhance the taste and make it more to my liking, but it is quite a waste of time.

  • Heat-up time

Besides, the Breville Nespresso Vertuo has a heat-up time of 15 seconds, which is faster than the DeLonghi Vertuo Next, with about 25 seconds. This means that you can enjoy your coffee sooner and don’t have to wait as long for it to brew. For those who like to drink their coffee as quickly as possible, the Breville Vertuo is a great pick.

  • Crema production

When it comes to crema quality, I have to admit to being somewhat disappointed with the DeLonghi Vertuo Next. The crema is not as good as I had expected. It is loose and foamy and soon begins to break down in less than a minute. I could see huge holes forming along the sides of the mug, resembling sponges.

The Breville Nespresso Vertuo, on the other hand, makes a bit better crema layer of coffee. It is thicker and more full-bodied. There was no sign of any holes forming in it.

Cleaning & Maintenance

Winner: Breville Nespresso Vertuo

In both the Breville Nespresso Vertuo and DeLonghi Vertuo Next, there is a descaling alert that keeps you informed when maintenance is due. However, I found that Breville’s descaling function performs better and has fewer errors reported than DeLonghi’s.

My DeLonghi Vertuo Next coffee machine usually has an orange light that constantly blinks, meaning it is in descaling mode. However, I have already cleaned the machine and don’t know why this issue persists. The only way to make it work again is to unplug the power cord.

Aside from that, I noticed a serious issue with Vertuo Next when I refilled the water reservoir and saw a puddle of water on the counter beneath the machine. I thought maybe I had spilled some when filling it, but then I realized the water was coming from the machine itself. It was slowly dripping down the sides of the lid and pooling on the counter.

As a result, I have to constantly clean the machine to prevent mold from growing or water damage to the circuits. It also takes time for me to contact customer service, request technical support, and wait for my problem to be resolved.

Fortunately, I don’t experience these errors with the Breville Vertuo. I just followed the descaling guideline, and the machine has been working fine for me so far. This is a big advantage compared to its competitor.

Utility

Winner: DeLonghi Vertuo Next

I believe that Breville Nespresso Vertuo and DeLonghi Vertuo Next are two awesome choices in terms of utility. However, Delonghi Vertuo Next has a slight edge over its rival. The product has WIFI and Bluetooth functionality that allows it to pair with the Nespresso mobile app, while the Breville does not.

To be more specific, I can order different types of capsules or accessories I want and also have access to an online assistant who can troubleshoot any issues I might have through the app. This makes the DeLonghi much more versatile and user-friendly, perfect for tech-savvy users like me.

Furthermore, DeLonghi Vertuo Next offers an extra brew size with the Pour-Over Carafe (18 ounces), in addition to the five standard sizes – Espresso (single-shot and double-shot) and Coffee (5 ounces, 8 ounces, and 14 ounces). There is no doubt that this is a plus for the machine compared to its rival.

Value for money

Winner: Breville Nespresso Vertuo

Both Breville Nespresso Vertuo and DeLonghi Vertuo Next come with a range of features that coffee lovers will appreciate. In my opinion, though, the Breville Nespresso Vertuo is a more advantageous purchase.

Firstly, each machine’s price point is important to consider. The Breville model is slightly more expensive than the DeLonghi, but it also has some perks that may be worth the extra cost. It can deliver rich flavors of coffee, and its durability seems superior to the Delonghi Vertuo Next, detailed in the cleaning and maintenance section above.

Moreover, Breville Nespresso Vertuo has a larger water reservoir which doesn’t require you to refill frequently. That’s convenient for me to enjoy a cup of espresso on a busy morning.

On the other hand, It is true that DeLonghi Vertuo Next has some unique features, like the app control, but the quality of the drink it makes sometimes does not meet my preferences. Plus, the water leakage or blinking orange light is a nuisance and may cost me extra time and money to fix.

Breville Nespresso Vertuo Vs DeLonghi Vertuo Next: Similarities

Apart from the key differences mentioned, I will point out some interesting similarities between Breville Nespresso Vertuo and DeLonghi Vertuo Next to assist you in making an informed decision.

Barcode Recognition Technology

The Breville Nespresso Vertuo and DeLonghi Vertuo Next come with barcode-scanning technology. Each capsule has a unique barcode connected to an automatic extraction parameter that controls water flow, volume, temperature, infusion time, and capsule rotation. This ensures that each cup of coffee is brewed precisely, regardless of the type of capsule used.

One-Touch Operation

One more similarity between the Breville Nespresso Vertuo and DeLonghi Vertuo Next is the one-touch brewing operation. With this feature, all you have to do is place your coffee capsule in the machine and press a button – the product will then take care of the rest. Basically, if you want a hassle-free way to make great coffee at home, either of these machines would do the trick.
