Jura E8 vs Gaggia Babila: Which Of These Mid-range Machines Will Compliment Your Coffee Experience Better?

I get commissions for purchases made through links in this post. Read more

Which espresso machine would you choose? Jura E8 vs Gaggia Babila isn’t an easy debate to decide the winner. There is quite a significant gap in their prices, and there are trade-offs to consider.

Although both machines are excellent competitors, the Jura E8 triumphs due to its programmed dosage control, flavorful coffee, and superior brewing capabilities. It boasts 15 programmable recipes that users can brew with a touch of their fingertip, which is something Babila can’t quite catch up with. Every operational aspect of this machine is worth considering, from my experience with the device.

On the other hand, the Gaggia Babila produces excellent espresso but with fewer options for customization. Nonetheless, with a flexible milk system and a more durable coffee grinder, it still stands out as a proper mid-range choice. In addition, it is at the top of its game when it comes to transforming coffee from beans to cups. So you should check this one out as well!

Jura E8 vs Gaggia Babila: Differences

Jura E8 wins 3-1 and ties once against Gaggia Babila thanks to its advanced PEP technology that extracts espresso with high consistency with the same exposure time between coffee ground and water. It also boasts a prettier display with color. There are so many details I prefer about Jura E8 to Gaggia Babila.

Espresso extraction

Winner: Jura E8

The Gaggia Babila appears a little unexceptional compared to the Jura’s PEP controls and automated pre-infusion. Speaking about programmed strengths, the Gaggia Babila has 5 strength levels, compared to 8 on the Jura E8.

Even after adjusting the coffee dosage, the Jura E8 excels in producing richer espresso.
Here too, there is a distinction based on control. You can change the pre-infusion time on the Gaggia Babila from 2 to 4 seconds. The Jura E8 automatically determines the best window of time to extract the most flavor from the espresso.

Grinder

Tie

The steel conical burr grinder on the Jura E8 is more initially sharp and silent than any other kind of grinder. But as time passes, you may anticipate it losing some of its accuracy and consistency. In addition, it has an aroma control grinder with six levels.

On the other hand, the Babila has a ceramic burr grinder. More significantly, the grinder offers 15 level adjustments, which is more than twice as many as the Jura E8.

This gives the Gaggia greater versatility and gives you a wider range of choices between coarse and fine coffee powder. For strong espressos, coffee enthusiasts demand a flawlessly fine grind. On the other hand, a little coarser grind is appropriate if you wish to drink robust, black coffee.

Heating System

Winner: Jura E8

The temperature settings on the Jura and Gaggia are another way that they differ in how they change the espresso flavor. You get a quicker heating system with the Jura E8’s Thermoblock, which heats up in under 25 seconds. Additionally, Jura’s Thermoblock heating system offers button-activated temperature adjustments.

Things are a little different with the Gaggia Babila since you may select between low, regular, and high heat. However, you should always use the maximum temperature settings, in my opinion. Or, if you’re really curious, configure it to brew a dark espresso roast at a low temperature. And while making a mild espresso roast, aim for the maximum temperature.

Display

Winner: Jura E8

Jura E8 comes with a color display showing how the final drink will look, and users can select the drink that calls their attention via the touchscreen. I have used it many times and can tell you it’s quite responsive. The modern technology is the highlight of this model, after all.

As for Babila, it comes with a classic digital pixel display controlled by a set of buttons. The good thing about it is that the buttons aren’t very prone to damage or lag. But, it lacks the modern touch of a smartphone or a tablet that users are familiar with.

I’m more fond of the touchscreen that Jura E8 has to offer.

Milk System

Winner: Gaggia Babila

Gaggia Babila features a dual milk system, something highly rare in espresso machines. With the steam wand, you can froth creamier milk for drinks like flat whites or mochas. And with the automatic milk carafe, you can enjoy a good cup of cappuccino without moving a finger.

The appliance will immediately pour espresso and frothed milk into your cup whenever you set it under the nozzle. The milk may then be kept in the carafe by putting it back in the refrigerator.

There is just the automated milk system with a spout with the Jura E8. The Jura carafe is available to you, but you must purchase it separately.

The Jura E8 allows milk froth density modification directly from the carafe in terms of adjustments. However, the Babila’s froth density cannot be changed using the carafe.

Cleaning and Maintenance

Winner: Jura E8

Cleaning

The brew group of the Gaggia Babila is replaceable. Give the brew group a thorough cleaning once a week under running water from the faucet, and it should function flawlessly.

The Jura E8 has a replaceable brew group, unlike the Babila. It would be best if you used the cleaning pills from Jura to clean it. Run a cycle with plain water after dropping one tablet into the bypass doser. This is sufficient to clear any clogs and thoroughly clean the machine.

Water filter

Both machines offer water filters. However, the Jura E8 has an excellent CLEARYL filter and RFID technology. This tells you when the filter needs to be modified using intelligent detection. The nice part about it is that, as long as the RFID is used as the machine’s water filter, you never have to descale it.

The Gaggia Babila’s water filter detects water hardness levels. However, suppose you use the appliance frequently. In that case, you need to descale it because it functions like any basic filter without advanced technology, which is good enough to clean water but not enough to avoid scale formation.
